Gender Pay Gap
In the early 60s, women working full time were making 59 cents to a man's dollar. In 1963, The Equal Pay Act (EPA) was passed which is a federal law that prohibits pay discrimination on the basis of sex. Since the EPA was passed, the wage gap has narrowed less than half a cent per year.
The American Association of University Women did a study calculating when the wage gap would close for women based on their race. According to their study:
Asian women will receive equal pay in 2041
White women will receive equal pay in 2069
Black women will receive equal pay in 2369
Hispanic women will receive equal pay in 2451
This means Black and Brown women will not have pay equality for another 400 years! It is imperative that we advocate for pay transparency to foster a culture of workplace equality.
